check-out. closing the book.

Last day of studio was quite a memorable one.

I came late with my project last minute again.
I felt relief because we just finished the last project. It was down to exam papers and then holidays!
But the sad part is that it was the last project of the semester of Year 1.
It was the typical ending of studio.
Came into the semester with full anticipation, excitement and fear. Cramped up the whole semester with assignments.
To a point that you finish your project just because you want to fulfil a task and continue with the next one until you meet the last one.

Just like the first semester,I only felt the miss of studio on the last day.

This time we had the lecturers to say a few words of thanks, advice and encouragements.
Their words did encouraged me:)
It was a wrap up for us to continue to Year 2,
with flash backs of studio trip to KL photos projected on the wall of Design Studio 100.

I'm glad that during this semester we had the exposure to explore interior design and town planning.
Just like how macro and micro economy is equally important, it was good to know the different scales of design field because they are interdependent to each other.

To end my last post, here's the most memorable words from Ar najib:

"studio sentiasa ada."

Studio is on everyday as long as there is still work to do.
Studio must not be confined as a monday+friday-only.
It was actually a full time commitment.
so, Jangan kita curi tulang lagi :)

cheers!
for every work done, we have to remember to take a rest.
have a blessed break till September :)

Project 7 : Exhibition

It's down to interior and i chose living room to be exhibited.
This is the same living room as the bungalow in Project 06.

Living room is the first room you see when you step into most houses.
It is a place for meant for people to gather and have fellowship.
Living room, to me, has to be spacious, bright (natural light), and cosy.
It is a place where everybody says "make yourself at home"
It is a place to welcome visitors of the house.

I didn't really create any partitions and major ceiling works.
With a space of 5m x 3m,
I think what i did was only purely arranging furniture. That's all. :D
What I feel is that the room will  be cosy only when people live in it.

We had a studio trip to Kuala Lumpur in the first weekend of the project period.
So we were told to choose furniture from stores we visited to be put into our room we design.
I chose 3 from Ikea.

Project 6 : Transform

Finally we are now heading to buildings.. Project 6. a bungalow.
I had an air well in my house and I didn't want to miss that out since with a bungalow,
I will have space for it and a bungalow does need some extra light at the centre of the building.

some of the rough arrangements of space.

proper scaled drawing. 1:100

deciding final measurements of rooms and spaces.

going 2D to 3D : after floor plan, I worked on the elevations.

my first time to white print this time. tape it well then it'll look perfect without stains.

the print.

To sum this up, I've learnt a lot about space planning. There are always a minimum space to start with.
Rooms and toilets, they need a standard space for furnitures and pathways. For that we do need to take interior design into account. Even if one man is able to fit into the space, comfort matters too. We surely wouldn't want to feel compressed by walls in a room.

i think i prefer semi-detached houses. i tend to focus on one side of the garden for the bungalow.
or maybe, i can grow fruits and vegetables on the other side :D

Project 5 : APEX Community

This is the one and only group work for this semester. Bigger group for a bigger scale project:
Neighbourhood Planning.
Given: a lot at Jln Tun Dr. Awang, near the military camp,
on the way from Bayan Baru to Penang International Airport.

Nat, Ila, Ifa & I had a kick start with bubble diagram, followed by collage style
planning & arrangement of circulation, housing lots & utilities.

The Layout Plan for first critic.

Road link from main road (Jln Tun Dr. Awang) to neighbourhood.
Sketches: The garden.

another trial with marker.

Final work:
Meet Taman Sentosa (Sentosa means peace & serenity), made for retired soldiers.
This name suits it as these group of people had something sacrificed in the name of peace.
Features of this neighbourhood would be
(1) one of the entrance covered with 2 rows of tree canopy, like this one in
Taiping Lake Garden, Taiping, Perak
&
 (2) the Landscaped garden where the young and elderly can have their recreations and

1. Bubble diagram

2. Layout Plan

3. Landscape plan
notice the entrance and the garden.

4. Ila, Nat & Ifa did 3D Sketchup

5. Brochure by Ifa
 6. my printed sketches (entrance & garden)

Planning a neighbourhood isn't simple at all. Learned a lot of by laws and specifications for circulation and service road. We learned how to utilize spaces. There are spaces to be occupied and spaces that are supposed to be left untouched to create harmony and a sense of calmness.

My favourite part of the project? the canopied entrance :)
